All of the world, social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and many others have connect everyone at the touch of a finger tip. The comfortability and accessibility of social media has become an essential part of our daily lives. Everything we do and post is effected by what society thinks is appropriate and important. As young adults in the 21st century, we are exposed to the negative effects of social media more than anyone. We are the generation that has our smart phones attached to our hands and forming our social circles. While social media has pushed us to be technologically advanced and in touch with others from all over the world, it has many negative effects as well. People tend to hide behind their phones and profiles and can use it to bully others nonstop. It has taught us that there are no consequences to our actions if they are anonymous. The motivation behind posting things now is how many likes or comments can a person get. While some people post to make themselves happy and present themselves how they want, many others are influenced by what others will gravitate towards and like. This can be very dangerous for individuals as they loose their sense of individuality and could possibly have severe mental illness because they don’t feel appreciated or likes as much as other people on social media platforms. In this essay, the negative effects of social media usage will be made clear and help prove that bullying, trolling, and gratification all play a role in developing metal illness for high users.
